What does it mean to be Low Sodium? Sodium is a mineral found naturally in foods as well can be added to foods. Sodium (or saltiness) is one our primary taste senses and thus is often associated with enhanced and stronger flavors. However, sodium plays an important role in maintaining normal fluid balance in the body and can directly affect your blood pressure among other health impacts.
A low-sodium diet is important to follow for many people in order to control your heart health and prevent against heart problems. Limiting your sodium and thus your fluid rention will help prevent fluid around your heart, lungs, and pooling in your extremities. When you carry around extra fluid it makes your heart work harder and may increase your blood pressure. All our low-sodium meals contain 700 mg or less of sodium, to meet the American Heart Association (AHA) recommendations of maintaining a diet of 1500-2000mg of sodium per day.
